Speech at the Reception on May 9 2002 in Tokyo to
celebrate 50th anniversary of the establishment of
Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Pakistan
His Excellency Mr. Mitsuo Horiuchi,
President of Japan Pakistan Parliamentarians
Friendship League.
His Excellency Mr. Seiken Sugiura,
Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs.
His Excellency Mr. Yoshiro Mori,
Former Prime Minister of Japan.
Excellencies,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen.
I am very pleased to welcome all the distinguished
guests present here this evening to celebrate the 50th
Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic
relations between Japan and Pakistan. I am grateful
for the high level official participation at today’s
reception that reflects the close ties of friendship
between our two countries and expresses their common
commitment to further strengthen their partnership in
the years ahead. Ladies and Gentlemen, with your
presence tonight you all have not only honoured us but
also enhanced the significance of this special
occasion.
Various events to celebrate this landmark anniversary
have been planned in both countries. Events to
introduce Pakistani and Japanese culture, arts,
crafts, food and products are taking place in major
cities of the two countries. Mr. Mitsuo Horiuchi,
President of Japan Pakistan Parliamentarians
Friendship League has recently visited Pakistan as
Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Japan to greet
the people of Pakistan on the auspicious occasion.
The relationship between Japan and Pakistan is not
only old but strong as well. For many years Japan has
been our largest source of economic assistance, a
leading trading partner and a major source of foreign
investment. Our political ties have also been
excellent. Pakistan appreciates and understands
Japan’s expanding global role in the world, specially
in Asia, to strengthen forces of peace and stability
through economic development and by its principled
positions on international disputes. Japanese
people’s contribution to humanitarian causes has also
been impressive. Japan is, therefore, worthy of
universal praise and acclaim.
For Japan also, Pakistan is an important partner. As
a moderate Islamic nation Pakistan can facilitate
dialogue and regional interaction. It can be a factor
of stability and moderation. And as Pakistan
strengthens its economy and enhances its political
stability with the economic reforms agenda under the
leadership of President Musharraf, who paid a very
successful visit to Japan recently, it can be an even
more valuable partner of Japan.
The 50th Anniversary of our bilateral relations,
therefore, is truly a proud moment for both our
countries. By celebrating it we can not only
commemorate our substantial achievements in
relationship but also take the opportunity to reaffirm
our joint resolve to continue our journey to build
upon a shared vision of the future.
Long Live Pakistan-Japan Friendship.
